Chester Zoo was opened in 1931 by our founder George Mottershead.On 17 February 1931 Chester Zoological Gardens Limited was formed. On 9th May 1934 a new society known at the North of England Zoological Society Limited was formed with four Trustees appointed; Col. Richard Blair Young as Chairman, Mrs I. Johnson, Mrs E. Young and Professor Ramsbottom. The Society took over the gardens for the sum of £250 from Chester Zoological Gardens on 13th June 1934 with George Mottershead as the Director-Secretary.

Our Zoo News was Chester Zoo's first newsletter and was first published 6 years after the opening of the Zoo in 1931. There are 130 issues, although sometimes issues are combined into the same newsletter. Initially the newsletter was published monthly, but this isn't always consistent. From time to time the newsletter's title changes to Our Zoo News and Guide and then reverts back to Our Zoo News. Photographs first appeared in April 1939. In some of the issues between 1948 and 1954 there is a hand drawn map of the zoo reflecting a rapid period of the development of the zoo.
