      History

Zenon Dixon (Szewczyk) known as Ziggy. Ziggy came to work at the zoo on 14th March 1947. He was Polish and had escaped from Nazi occupied Poland. He came here via Hungary. He didn’t want to be repatriated when the war ended so he successfully applied to stay in Britain. To do this, he needed a job and so he came to work at the zoo. He took over looking after the chimps and the primates from Muriel. He later married and had two children and would continue to work up until just before he died in 1977 from cancer.
